Welcome to Buffalo Hiking Group

"Hiking is fun and a great way to explore the natural wonders our area offers!"

Thanks for visiting and we look forward to welcoming you to our club.

This group is for people who live in Buffalo or the Western New York area who like to hike, backpack, trek, snowshoe or camp. Here we can talk about hikes that we have done, plan new hikes and meet new friends! Join the group and feel free to invite others as well!

***Our group like many other hiking groups adheres to the "No Hiker Left Behind" Rule. The group will keep the pace of the slowest hiker so nobody gets lost and the group doesn't split up.***

TIPS FOR SAFE HIKING:

* Don’t hike alone - it’s safer and more fun to do the trail with a friend.
* Know your limitations. Don’t do more than you are able
* Bring plenty of water (One quart for short hikes-more for longer hikes).
* A water pack is preferable for you to keep your hands free while hiking.
* Wear appropriate footwear, preferably hiking boots.
* Wear light-colored, comfortable clothing.
* Bring a hat and sunblock (SPF 15 minimum).
* Use common sense and courtesy while on the trails.
* Announce your intentions and slow your pace when passing someone on the trails. Do not litter.
* Destruction or removal of plants, animals, historical, prehistoric or geological sites are prohibited.
* Do not chase or harass wildlife.
* Avoid putting your hands and feet anywhere you cannot see.
* Bring basic first aid supplies.
* Bring your cell phone

HIKE DIFFICULTY RATING SCALE:

***The information below is provided as a guide only. Each hiker assumes the risks associated with hiking in the great outdoors, including the responsibility for paying any bills associated with rescue efforts or medical care. The wise hiker always carries drinking water, food, and first aid items.***

* Moderate(M): Distance of 7 - 10 miles with an elevation gain that will generally not exceed 350 feet per mile, with a total elevation gain of no more than 1000 ft.

Past Hikes

Rock City State Forest (Little Rock City) Hike
Photo courtesy of Chris Henning
When we woke up and heard the rain outside we thought that it might wash out our hike, but as it happened the sky cleared and we had a great day at Rock City State Forest.  The rock formations there are amazing and many good pictures were taken.  A total of 15 members came along on the hike, despite the dreary looking weather in Buffalo and they were well rewarded with views of these formations that are millions of years old, and you can't forget the drumming!  Thank you to all that came out for this hike, we are still at our streak of no rain-outs yet since the group was formed!
